Taking place at Churchtown Dairy in Hudson, NY, the theme will be “Saving Real Organic: In Defense of Science.” It kicks off with an important debate about “Land Sparing” vs “Land Sharing” between Berkeley agroecologist Tim Bowles and NYT journalist Michael Grunwald.
Tim will argue for an agriculture based on the principles of Organic, Regenerative, and Agroecology. Michael will argue for an agriculture based on intensive production at whatever cost, in efforts to conserve as much untended land as possible for nature. It will be an important debate, hearkening back to the 2018 article in Nature that contends that organic farming is worse for the climate than chemical farming.
Other speakers include Tyrone Hayes, a Berkeley scientist who was targeted by chemical giant Syngenta after publishing research that revealed health issues around the use of Atrazine, one of Syngenta’s top selling herbicides.
And Naomi Oreskes, a Harvard professor whose best-selling books Merchants of Doubt and The Big Myth have exposed the manipulation of public opinion by large corporations. Dr. Oreskes has successfully called out Bayer Monsanto for ghostwriting a hugely significant article twenty years earlier, causing it to be retracted by a scientific journal.
There will also be farmers speaking at the conference in response to these issues.
The theme of these talks is the corruption of real science by corporations. Just as we struggle to create a government free of the corrupting influence of corporations, so are we struggling for the same thing in science.
