Eliot Coleman

Eliot Coleman is world famous as an organic pioneer. He is a farmer, author, agricultural researcher and educator. His most recent book, The Self Fed Farm and Garden, is already considered a classic text of Organic farming. His 1989 book, The New Organic Grower, is important reading for organic farmers. Other books include The Winter Harvest Handbook, Four Season Harvest, and with his wife Barbara Damrosch, The Four Season Farm Gardeners Cookbook. He served for two years as Executive Director of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM). He was an advisor to the USDA during its 1979–80 study, Report And Recommendations On Organic Farming, a document that formed the basis for today’s USDA National Organic Program. It would be hard to exaggerate Eliot’s impact on the world organic movement.

Eliot has trained many organic farmers and has inspired countless others. With his partner Barbara Damrosch, he ran Four Season Farm in Maine until recently, when they passed that responsibility to younger hands, Molly Friedland and Caleb Hawkins.

Eliot continues to offer guidance to many farmers and eaters, including in his role on the Advisory Board of the Real Organic Project. There are numerous interviews with Eliot at the Real Organic Podcast.
